Two Sides of The Beat

The mission here was to drop my bags, freshen up, get good shots of the Fridge, investigate Jozi street
fashion trends and yes, have a grand time whilst doing it.

The venue was set to be at Kitchener’s Braamfontein, where I arrived right on time to catch Raiko’s set, I’m not from the school of hip-hop but judging by mine and the crowd’s bodily movements, it’s safe to say it was killer. The Fridge performed a couple new tracks that I didn’t know, now this is very traumatising for an avid fan like me who likes to sing along, though fantastic in the musical sense. Nonetheless I was delighted with their performance, nothing short of that soulful ,neo-jazzy fire they always bring. Oh yes Samkelo’s (the lead vocalist’s) customary hoodie was very much present, however the mysterious backpack was a no show. I stayed long enough to jam to  KidFonque’s full set as well, which was really awesome with a house, dub-step and hip-hop vibe in the mix.

Throughout the night saw some familiar faces and a met a number of creative breeds. A dominant trend was that of the head-wrapt hat which I’m fond of, as it carries for me the sense of “I’m proud to be a woman” with and by no means does it mean that if you don’t wear one you are not proud to be a women either. I feel that with the different colours, bolder prints and variance in ways it can be styled it takes away that slightly oppressive obligation our mothers endured and rather turns it into something ladies may find pleasure in wearing, or men for that matter *hahaha.

The wee hours of the morning was when I decided to call it a night, proving that it was a great night indeed, and  my mind was starting to play tricks on me proving that it was really for me time to go catch up on some much needed  sleep.
